Letter to the Office of the Norwegian Prime Minister
This blog post is based on e-mails sent to the Office of the Prime Minister of Norway and all the political parties in Norway in October 2023. I mostly received polite answers, however, indicating that the respondants hardly had read the basic attachment (that is the basic document in this website). The message sent is still relevant, only now more so.
I first present the original text in Norwegian followed by a translation to English.

Svært mange mennesker i verden merker allerede i stor grad klimaendringer.
• Stans i oljeleting.
• Samlet plan for reduksjon i bilbruk
• Nye styringsprinsipper for oljefondet
Jeg anbefaler å lese «The Value of a Whale» skrevet av Adrienne Buller, som diskuterer nettopp slike typer løsninger.
Finn Welde

Hello
I start with an important and brave message from the well-known Norwegian author Maja Lunde. https://www.nrk.no/ytring/1.16511756
I try to discuss these challenges even further.
To be able to hope for real action and change, we have to be honest. We have to look the challenges straight in the eye.
Very many people worldwide are haunted by the effects of the climate crisis. Now even Norway is seriously affected.
The world acts on the basis of the Paris Agreement. This agreement is based on a principle that all nation-states must have a goal of reducing the emissions of climate gases within its own borders. Even if every nation-state followed the intention of the agreement, it only means that we limit the worst consequences of the crisis. The consequences would still be very severe, often most severe for those contributing least to these consequences. In spite of the Paris-agreement emissions is rapidly increasing. It becomes quite clear that to continue living as we are used to in the short term is far more important than the global future.
Rich industrial countries, including Norway, also use significant resources outside their borders. The consequences of the total consumption (and use of areas) are much larger than what they take the responsibility for due to the Paris-agreement.
Nature behaves according to what we actually do. It is not fooled by green-washing and creative financing and book-keeping. Public opinion does not rule nature either.
The message from most politicians today goes like this:
«Global heating is serious. Vote for us, and we will handle it. We go for technological and economical solutions in due time. You can still trust in economic growth - We of course will provide it. You can live as you are used to with your habits and also your expectations. »
The message from a politician taking responsibility would go like this:
«The crisis of nature and climate is existentially serious for everybody globally. Our consumption in rich industrial countries must be reduced substantially to reduce global heating and secure the health and diversity of nature. Individuals must prioritize from a personal climate budget. Society must arrange for individual choices to be effective supplying circular economy and well-planned communications and living environments. Society must reconsider common activities being burdensome for climate and nature like production of energy, roads, building and construction and the production of goods that are unnecessary or harmful. The use of areas at the cost of nature and ecosystems must be substantially reduced. Together we must find ways of doing this by strengthening a healthy society where everyone has a voice, and a sufficient level of welfare. We must do the job based on sound knowledge and honesty. “
Destruction of nature and climate are global challenges. What we do here and now has consequences for humans far away geographically and far into the future. This also means that the challenges are complex. Mainstream economic thinking and practice, war and military armament, ailing global governance, technological development running wild, and a chaotic information ecosystem, easily lead to paralysis.
I still have tried to analyze, according to my limited capacities, global connections, structures, and options. We have to ask new questions. My analysis is found on the website www.earthyventures.com. I also notice that both the Secretary General of the United Nations and the previous and present Pope advocate the significant need for changing economic rules of the game nd global governance.
Global challenges are not solved by personal choices or the normal political processes I nation-states alone. Concrete initiatives at all levels up to global instances, however, are important. If a country in a very lucky position, like Norway, in fact choose to take the relevant responsibility, that can result in a lighthouse effect. Such a choice first can influence other rich industrial countries, and it can give developing countries with large populations better goals to strive towards than the present developing goals.
Proposed measures for Norway:
Planned and relatively quick reduction in oil and gas activities. Stop in searching for new resources.
Stop for importing meat and animal feed, including feed for farmed fish, and stop for subsidizing parts of inland meat production.
Total plan for producing energy, using energy, energy efficiency and saving of energy. Renewable energy and technological innovations must be parts of the plan. The plan must result in reduced climate footprint and destruction of nature.
Total plan for reducing the use of cars, mainly private cars.
A new regime for building regulations.
Start work to clarify consequences for nature and climate of both private and public consumption.
New political and administrative framework for practical protection of nature.
Initiatives, and substantial professional support to a global regime protecting seabed. Mineral extraction and mining must very clearly be based on precaution principles.
Initiatives, and substantial professional support to a global regime for managing fish resources and other live resources at sea.
New principles for managing the oil fund
Development and spread of technological innovations for renewable energy and carbon capture.
Start a process for reorganizing work life.
Start a process for reorganizing aid policy in developing countries.
This proposal is further described and justified in the main document found here www.earthyventures.com.
This is significantly different from and more comprehensive than the present Norwegian goals regarding climate. The gap between what nature and climate need, and what the world, including Norway, do today to meet these needs is enormous.
Important Norwegian measures are based on mechanisms that principally means to buy the country out of problems. I recommend reading “The Value of a Whale” written by Adrienne Buller. She discusses such mechanisms thoroughly. This is not what is needed to obtain real results regarding nature and climate.
Norway is to day basically a well-functioning society. A good society for the lives of most inhabitants. This is very valuable and must be taken care of. We, however, is a significantly worse global participant than we like to think. The good society is not dependent upon increased material consumption and wealth. The lighthouse measures are demanding, but also imply positive options. We still need innovation, but within new frameworks.
I understand that my analysis, questions, and proposals are on a very principled level. To develop a practical policy that is sufficiently holistic and long-term means a significant further work. It is, however, crucial to be honest, understand the severity, find the right compass course and keep a fast and steady course.
I hope you take the challenge. Unpleasant input is often most valuable.
Best regards
Finn Welde
